About This Tour
Every winter between May and August, tens of thousands of giant cuttlefish gather in the shallow waters of Whyalla for their spectacular annual breeding season – the largest cuttlefish aggregation in the world.
The Whyalla Cuttlefish Tour offers divers the rare opportunity to witness this natural wonder up close. Watch as males display their dazzling color changes, unique patterns, and hypnotic movements in a competition to attract mates.

- Buoyancy Control Device (BCD)
- Regulator with octopus and pressure gauge
- 7mm wetsuit or drysuit (depending on availability and water temperature)
- Mask, snorkel, and fins (limited availability if not self-supplied)
Equipment Required
- Personal mask, snorkel, fins (recommended for best fit)
- Hood, gloves, and boots (water can be very cold in winter)
- Dive computer or timing device
- Underwater camera (highly recommended)
- Warm dry clothes and towel for after the dive
Preparation Notes
- Seasonality: Available May – August only, during the cuttlefish aggregation
- Arrival: Please arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled tour for check-in and briefing
- Certification: Minimum PADI Open Water Diver (or equivalent)
- Experience: Cold-water and shore-entry diving experience recommended; refresher course available if needed
- Health: Complete the PADI Medical Questionnaire; physician clearance may be required
- Fitness: Moderate fitness required for shore entries in winter conditions
- Weather Policy: Tours subject to weather and sea conditions – safety is always the priority
